Designed for juniors and seniors, the Academy of Health And Fitness is a two-year program allowinbg students to explore and participate in training for future careers in health, fitness, and sport industries.

The Academy is open to all junior and senior students attending Redondo Union High School. During 1995-1996, the premiere year, the Academy was only open to junior students (Class of 1997). However they are gone and the program has expanded to students interested in their junior and senior year. It is preferred to enter in your junior year.

The instructional approach for the AHF is designed around health and fitness topics. Students will be blocked into academy core subjects. AHF teachers will have a common preparation period to plan an integrated curriculum.

During the junior and senior years, students will:

  1. Receive specialized instruction in the academy core subjects:

Grade 11: English, Social Studies, and PE/Health

Grade 12: English, Government, Economics, and Internship

  1. Be introduced to health and fitness careers and employment opportunities.

  2. Be given an opportunity to do field work in the health, fitness, and sports community.

Every high school student can benefit from an academy, but it will be expecially beneficial to a student who wants to learn and have experience in the health, fitness, and sport industries. The student will have the possibility of an internship, on-the-job training, and some optional industry certifications.

Some of the advantages for students enrolling in AHF include:

  1. thematic approach to curriculum

  2. team building amon students who have common goals

  3. enhanced contact time between students and teachers

  4. training in fields with employment prospects

  5. "certification" in marketable skills

  6. special insignia on the transcripts upon program completion

One of the key components of the AHF is the opportunity for career exploration outside the traditional classroom setting. Such additional learning activities include applied work-place learning, job shadowing, mentoring, community service experiences, and competency-based internships. These career experiences will be part of the student's educational plan and may take place in community partnerships at hospitals, clinics, health clubs, nutrition centers, and other health, fitness, and sport related businesses.
